Sydney Water Corporation
Sydney Water is Australia’s largest water utility, with an area of operations covering 12,700 km2 in and around Sydney. They provide wastewater services to over 4.6 million people throughout their network, and collect and treat approximately 1.5 billion litres of water each day. To provide these services, Sydney Water consumes 400 GWh of electricity per annum – almost 1% of NSW’s electricity consumption. Pumping stations for water and wastewater account for 41% of Sydney Water’s electricity usage, and there are around 780 pumping stations throughout their network.
Sydney Water has a strong and proven commitment to renewables generation, and in 2015-16 they produced 21% of their electricity needs through renewables generation. Sydney Water has instituted a strategic plan to further implement renewables generation in their network, and have identified their pumping stations as key focus areas for this plan.
Sydney Water has demonstrated experience in undertaking renewable energy projects, including projects harnessing biogas for electricity generation, several hydroelectric generation projects, a 60 kW solar PV system on their headquarters building in Potts Point and a further 100 kW of solar PV across other assets. In addition to the S4 project, Sydney Water are installing a further 300 kW of solar PV systems across a number of sites in their network over the next three years.
